Carr: Gwinnett County Man Convicted of Human Trafficking in Unit’s First Undercover Chat Case

ATLANTA, GA – Attorney General Chris Carr today announced that Demonte Engle has pleaded guilty to one count of Human Trafficking following an undercover investigation conducted by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office in 2021. This is the Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit’s first undercover chat case, whereas the defendant solicited a purported 14-year-old female online for sex but was actually communicating with an undercover officer. This also marks the fourth conviction to be obtained by the Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit since July 25, 2022.

Carr: Medicaid Fraud Division Obtains Guilty Plea in DeKalb County

ATLANTA, GA – Attorney General Chris Carr today announced that Janice Cooks has pleaded guilty to one felony count of Medicaid Fraud in DeKalb County Superior Court. Judge Gregory A. Adams accepted the plea on Oct. 11, 2022, and sentenced the defendant to 10 years of probation. The Court also ordered the defendant to repay $31,519.60 in restitution. Cooks is now excluded from practicing as a provider of healthcare services under the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

ATLANTA, GA – Attorney General Chris Carr today announced that the office’s new statewide Gang Prosecution Unit has indicted five alleged members of the Insane Crips in Muscogee County. This indictment stems from the shooting death of a 20-year-old man in Columbus in June 2021. The defendants are facing 52 charges in total, including violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree and weapons offenses.
