ATLANTA, GA - Attorney General Chris Carr today announced that law firms and legal organizations across Georgia raised a record breaking 1.34 million pounds of food during the 6th Annual Georgia Legal Food Frenzy.

“More than 60 percent of kids in Georgia are eligible for free or reduced meals during the school year,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “During the summer, these children and families count on their regional food banks as a source of food. The Georgia Legal Food Frenzy is designed to ensure the food banks are sufficiently stocked to meet this increased demand. We are extremely proud to work alongside our partners at the Georgia Food Bank Association, the State Bar of Georgia and the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia on this campaign, and I want to thank the Georgia legal community for demonstrating, once again, their passion and dedication in this most worthy effort.”

A total of 215 law firms and legal organizations, representing more than 14,000 members, competed for the grand prize Attorney General’s Cup. Breaking Joe S. Habachy’s three-year winning streak, Jenkins & Roberts, LLC of College Park was crowned the winner of the Attorney General’s Cup this year, with 7,605 pounds of food per person, the most per person statewide.

For the first time this year, a second grand prize, the Bar President’s Award, was awarded to the firm who tabulated the most total pounds overall in the competition. The first ever winner of the Bar President’s Award is Coleman Talley LLP of Valdosta, with a record 141,000 pounds of food.

“Thank you again to the legal community and our leadership for championing the fight against hunger,” said Executive Director of the Georgia Food Bank Association Danah Craft. “This year’s efforts were truly outstanding. We are honored to be working with you and know that, together, we can become a hunger-free Georgia.”

"We are extremely proud of our members and the work of our Young Lawyers Division," said State Bar of Georgia President Patrick T. O'Connor. "The Georgia Legal Food Frenzy gives us a chance to give back to our communities and help some of the most vulnerable in our state. The money we've raised ensures that children will be fed throughout the summer. It doesn't get much more important than that."

As a proponent of public-private partnerships, Carr offered a personal challenge to corporate, in-house counsel for increased participation this year. The competing corporate counsel answered Carr in collectively raising the equivalent of 117,241 pounds of food. The winner of the category was Serta Simmons Bedding with 6,254 pounds of food per person and 50,038 total pounds of food.

"I'm honored that the attorney general chose us to help with this project six years ago," said State Bar Young Lawyers Division President Jennifer Mock. "Our city representatives across the state worked diligently to make sure all of our state and local food banks were covered. I can't say thank you enough to everyone who participated and helped us make our goal and make this year, yet again, a huge success!"

Since its inception in 2012, the Georgia Legal Food Frenzy has raised the equivalent of 6.34 million pounds of food.
