Attorney General Samuel S. Olens has released information on fees and expenses paid to Special Assistant Attorneys General (“SAAGs”), outside counsel retained by the Georgia Department of Law to perform legal work on behalf of the state. SAAGs are typically retained to handle cases where the Attorney General’s office has insufficient staff attorneys to handle the caseload, cases where it would be inefficient to send staff attorneys to hearings for cases such as child support or deprivation hearings where cases are heard in all 159 counties, or in instances that involve a specialized practice area, such as admiralty law or intellectual property law, in which it is not economical to keep a specialist on staff at the Attorney General’s office.

This release of information continues the strong commitment that Olens made to keep transparent and open for public inspection as much of the business of the Attorney General’s office as possible. The Attorney General’s office routinely receives Open Records request for this type of SAAG data, and Olens wanted to make this information as readily accessible to the public as possible.
