The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.  The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Solicitor General Unit.

 

**This posting will be used to fill an Assistant or Deputy Solicitor General role - dependent  upon the experience and expertise of the applicant and the ability to perform at the respective level of responsibility required.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Assistant/Deputy Solicitor General will serve in the Solicitor General Unit, which oversees the Law Department’s appellate and multistate litigation. Attorneys in this position represent the State and its departments and agencies primarily in appellate matters and multistate litigation in state and federal courts, including the Georgia Supreme Court, Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): conducting legal research; drafting certiorari-stage and merits-stage appellate briefs; drafting amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the State and/or multistate coalitions; arguing appeals before state and federal courts; assisting with review of requests to join multistate amicus curiae briefs; and otherwise contributing to the overall work of the unit and Department, which may also include trial-level work.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Member of the Georgia Bar or bar pending
  • Graduation from an accredited law school
  • Federal judicial clerkship or state appellate clerkship or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated aptitude for legal research and brief writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with a federal appellate clerkship and two or more years of appellate litigation experience, including judicial clerkship experience.
