The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. 

Job Summary

Attorneys in this position may provide legal advice to the professional licensing boards, attend board meetings, represent the boards in administrative hearings and appeals, defend civil actions related to the 44 professional licensing boards in Georgia, and perform other duties as required.  Occasional travel may be required, primarily to Macon.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Litigates cases:
    1. Participates in hearings and appears in administrative, state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;
    2. Researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
    3. Interviews witnesses and hires expert witnesses;
    4. Participates in settlement negotiations;
    5. Prepares pleadings.
  2. Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice.
  3. Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
  4. Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions.
  5. Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
  6. Attends continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presentations at same
  7. Travel, as required by the position
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:

  1. Experience in a specific area of practice
  2. Trial experience

Additional Information

A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation.  Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver and Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter..
