The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.
Attorneys in this Section work to enforce the various environmental statutes of the State of Georgia. Client agencies include the Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, Department of Agriculture, Coastal Resource Division, Forestry Commission, and Historic Preservation Division (among others). The attorney will conduct enforcement actions against violators and defend the client agencies in the Office of State Administrative Hearings and in state and federal courts. The attorney will provide formal and informal advice to clients. Due to the evolving nature of environmental law, the attorney will need to keep abreast of recent legal developments and review sign-on opportunities for letters, comments and amicus briefs that may impact client agencies. Some travel may be necessary.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Litigates cases:
- participates in administrative hearings and appears in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;
- researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
- works with expert witnesses;
- participates in settlement negotiations;
- prepares discovery requests and responses.
- Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice.
- Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
- Participates in multistate working groups.
- Reviews sign-on opportunities for letters, comments and amicus briefs.
- Drafts formal and informal opinions in response to legal questions.
- Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
- Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
- Attends continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presentations at same
- Travel, as required by the position (typically not much travel is required)
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar
Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:
- Three years of litigation experience, an administrative law and/or environmental law background, and excellent writing skills.
A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation. Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter and copies of official college transcripts.
